May 28, 2012

Today we woke up and met outside the hotel at 8.15.  We walked down to the Duomo.  This is the dome of the Cathedral that Brunelleschi designed and built.  We immediately walked to the top of the dome, literally, we walked into the building and stepped straight on the first step.  I need a little time to mentally prepare myself for that.  We walked up all 468 steps to the top of the dome.  Similar to St. Paul's dome we hiked up in London, this one got pretty narrow in places, but nowhere near as bad.  We got some pretty good pictures, seeing as the dome is the tallest building in the city, we were above everything.  We walked down and were finished for the day around ten o clock.  I walked to see the Doors of Paradise, it is this set of bronze doors that Michelangelo and someone else competed against to work on.  Story goes that the pope wanted them to work together and Michelangelo wouldn't do it so the job was awarded to the other person.  Anyways, the doors were huge, and apparently it took six years to cast one panel on the eight panel door.  After this I met up with Kendall, KK, and Drew; we walked over to that main bridge we saw yesterday and kept walking.  I wanted to see a palace that we were planning to do as a group today but they are closed on Mondays... the name of the palace is the Pitti Palace.  It was one of many Medici palaces across Florence. We could only see the bland outside and not permitted to see the courtyards and inside areas.  Then we walked to a straw market and I got some shopping done for some people back at home.  I spent a little money but I covered most of my bases in one day so that's good.  We found a food market similar to the one in Barcelona and walked around there for a bit.  They had FRESH meat, cheese, wine, and other goods.  We came back to the hotel and I dropped my stuff off and checked emails and what not. I sent some emails out last night and everyone responded today, so I have three interviews set up now, getting there.  Tucker, Kyle, Joel, Jordan, and I went and walked around some more to see more of the city.  We stopped and had a late lunch.  I got a pizza and wine for ten euros, not cheap but it was good.  I came back and packed my stuff up because we have a ten o clock train out of here tomorrow, I don't want to have to do that in the morning. Sumner, Brady, Joel, Jack, Dave, and I went and got a great dinner at a place called ZA-ZA.  Joel and I split a meat sampler, and it was great.  We went out tonight and found this place called YAB, it was pretty fun.  We met some girls from Canada who took a pretty good shine to me, that southern charm I guess.  That's about it for today, check back tomorrow.

May 27, 2012

Today we woke up at 9.30, went and did laundry, and got another kebab all before we met up at the new hotel at 12.00.  The kebabs here are so much better than Rome, I didn’t think it was possible either.  They put everything in a pita bread sandwich… to die for.  Anyways, we met up with the group and dropped our bags in a closet in the hotel, the rooms weren’t ready, and surprisingly everyone made it back from their free days on time.  We immediately walked down to La Galleria Degli Arazzi, it was a museum that seemed to go on for days with statues, busts, paintings, and monuments either created by famous people or portraying famous people.  Next we went to the Academia Gallery, it was another museum with some more very interesting works of art.  The this is where the Statue of David is, your not supposed to but I got a picture, it was tough because they are on top of it.  I had no idea the statue was as big as it is, probably 30’ tall.  We then went to Ponte Vecchio, it is a bridge on the opposite side of town.  It was pretty cool to see, there were a lot of shops and street vendors.  Joel got himself a Folex, fake Rolex.  Next we walked BACK across town and through a little straw market, they all have the same stuff really but there are some really nice leather items that I want to take another look at.  We came back and finally checked into the rooms.  I’m staying with Dave here in Florence and we got a room on the lowest level, no four flights of stairs for us.  I worked on catching up on blogs and went and got some pizza… the best pizza I think I have ever had.  We just chilled out tonight and planned out our night for tomorrow.  I got some work done and went to sleep.  Check back tomorrow.

Today we slept in until about 9.30.  We caught a 11.20 train to Pisa, the rest of the group who was staying in Rapallo was also on this train, pure coincidence.  We all rode together to Pisa, Kyle and I had discussed seeing the leaning tower while we were there and no one else wanted to go (I don’t know why).  We had to stop in Pisa to switch trains to Florence anyways, so we took an hour break, caught a bus and went and checked out the leaning tower of Pisa, I figured I might not ever get to see it again.  Of course we took several stereotypical pictures holding up the tower.  It was really cool to see how quickly it started to lean, and how quickly it stopped throughout the years.  We took the bus back to the train station and caught a bus to Florence.  We got to Florence and met up with the other guys, we hadn’t booked a hotel for tonight so we were just winging it.  Luckily, eventually, we got a room at the same place, Hotel Boston.  We met up with Brady, Dave, Sumner, Jack, and Joel later on.  Dave stayed with Kyle and I and the others got a room at another hotel.  We all showered and got ready for the night.  Dave, Joel, Sumner, Brady, Jack, Kyle, and I went to eat at a place someone had recommended to Joel.  The place was called Osteria and it was really good.  I had a pasta with cheese and bacon in it.  We went to ‘The Lions Den’ which is an Irish/American bar… pretty much only American’s in there.  Apparently they take American money but I didn’t see any of that.  We walked around a little more and came back to the hotel and called it a night.

May 25, 2012

Today we woke up at 7.00 AM (I know it’s early for our days off but we didn’t want to miss out on the time we had there).  We took a fifteen minute train ride to Monterosso which is the farthest town away from where we are staying.  We walked around for a while checking out the town, then we met up with Morgan, Drew, Alex, Cameron, Kendall, and KK who came to Cinque Terre today.  We all loaded up on groceries and rented kayaks for the day. We paid 25 euro for the rental but it was well worth it.  We had them from about 10-5.  We kayaked from Monterosso to Vernazza, the next town over.  On the way we went into a few coves, admired the beautiful cliffs, and found an amazing waterfall. The water was falling about two hundred feet straight down. There was a grotto type area surrounding it and we stopped here for a good hour on the way.  We finally made it to Vernazza, which seemed like twenty miles, and had lunch and checked out the town.  There was really bad flooding a few months back in Vernazza, which is supposed to be the main town, and it was still under construction, so it wasn’t the best place to hang out.  We got back to kayaking and decided to go to the other side of Monterosso.  Monterosso is in a cove so we went directly from Vernazza to a point on the horizon, at one point we were about two miles away from any coast… would have been bad if someone were to tip out there.  We made it to the point on the horizon hoping to find some cool cliff jumps, and sadly there were none.  Some of them went further; Kyle and I went back and got a train back to La Spezia.  For some reason the Mediterranean water has much more salt in it so we had to go back to shower.  We got another train from La Spezia and went to Corniglia, the town right in the middle of Cinque Terre.  It is supposedly a really wine rich part of the coast; it is away from the water up in the cliffs of Italy’s coast.  There was a lot of wine, just not the cheap stuff that we needed.  Couldn’t spend too much seeing as I already have.  We eventually went back to Riomaggiore, the first town, and did the same thing as the night before. We met some girls from West Virginia who were also here on study abroad.  We all got some vino, went to our sunset spot, and watched the sun go down.  It was a good time.  We went back to the place and got a good night’s sleep, actually being able to sleep in tomorrow for a little while. Check out tomorrows post.
