May 25, 2012

Today we woke up at 7.00 AM (I know it’s early for our days off but we didn’t want to miss out on the time we had there).  We took a fifteen minute train ride to Monterosso which is the farthest town away from where we are staying.  We walked around for a while checking out the town, then we met up with Morgan, Drew, Alex, Cameron, Kendall, and KK who came to Cinque Terre today.  We all loaded up on groceries and rented kayaks for the day. We paid 25 euro for the rental but it was well worth it.  We had them from about 10-5.  We kayaked from Monterosso to Vernazza, the next town over.  On the way we went into a few coves, admired the beautiful cliffs, and found an amazing waterfall. The water was falling about two hundred feet straight down. There was a grotto type area surrounding it and we stopped here for a good hour on the way.  We finally made it to Vernazza, which seemed like twenty miles, and had lunch and checked out the town.  There was really bad flooding a few months back in Vernazza, which is supposed to be the main town, and it was still under construction, so it wasn’t the best place to hang out.  We got back to kayaking and decided to go to the other side of Monterosso.  Monterosso is in a cove so we went directly from Vernazza to a point on the horizon, at one point we were about two miles away from any coast… would have been bad if someone were to tip out there.  We made it to the point on the horizon hoping to find some cool cliff jumps, and sadly there were none.  Some of them went further; Kyle and I went back and got a train back to La Spezia.  For some reason the Mediterranean water has much more salt in it so we had to go back to shower.  We got another train from La Spezia and went to Corniglia, the town right in the middle of Cinque Terre.  It is supposedly a really wine rich part of the coast; it is away from the water up in the cliffs of Italy’s coast.  There was a lot of wine, just not the cheap stuff that we needed.  Couldn’t spend too much seeing as I already have.  We eventually went back to Riomaggiore, the first town, and did the same thing as the night before. We met some girls from West Virginia who were also here on study abroad.  We all got some vino, went to our sunset spot, and watched the sun go down.  It was a good time.  We went back to the place and got a good night’s sleep, actually being able to sleep in tomorrow for a little while. Check out tomorrows post.
